On April 1, 2020, the FDA issued a voluntary recall of Zantac due the possibility that the drug causes cancer. In their press release announcing this recall, the FDA stated that “The FDA is committed to ensuring that the medicines Americans take are safe and effective. We make every effort to investigate potential health risks and provide our recommendations to the public based on the best available science. We didn’t observe unacceptable levels of NDMA in many of the samples that we tested. However, since we don’t know how or for how long the product might have been stored, we decided that it should not be available to consumers and patients unless its quality can be assured,” said Janet Woodcock, M.D., director of the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. “The FDA will continue our efforts to ensure impurities in other drugs do not exceed acceptable limits so that patients can continue taking medicines without concern.”
According to the FDA, “NDMA is a probable human carcinogen (a substance that could cause cancer). In the summer of 2019, the FDA became aware of independent laboratory testing that found NDMA in ranitidine. [Zantac]”
If you are using the popular heartburn medication known as Zantac (ranitidine), you should know that it has tested positive for ingredients that are associated with cancer. This has led to a range of issues, including recalls, removals of products, and continued investigations of the situation.

Zantac recalled over cancer fears
In October 2019, the manufacturer of Zantac announced that it would request a voluntary recall of Zantac OTC (an over-the-counter product that can be acquired without a prescription), in the United States and Canada because of “possible contamination with a nitrosamine impurity called N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA).” The manufacturer, Sanofi, suggested that the move was “precautionary” and recommended that all patients using Zantac OTC should consult with health care professionals and pharmacists regarding questions.
Aside from the Zantac recall, other drug manufacturers such as Apotex and Novartis are recalling their U.S.-sold ranitidine products. The major drug store chains have removed Zantac and its generic versions from their inventory shelves. Prescription ranitidine is still approved and being used for certain treatments involving ulcers and gastroesophageal reflux disease.
NDMA and the link to Cancer
NDMA is a contaminant that is present in water and all types of foods, both fresh and processed. It is officially classified as a likely human carcinogen based on animal studies because human research is not as extensive. Harvard Medical School comments that NDMA “may cause cancer only after exposure to high doses over a long period of time” and the CDC (Centers for Disease Control” has stated that the NDMA causes problems to animal and human livers. It’s also connected with severe liver conditions such as cancer, and testicular and lung cancer as well, according to the CDC.
Other medications contain NDMA, such as Valsartan, a blood pressure and heart medicine. It is possible that these products were contaminated with NDMA during the manufacturing process in China and India.
