Our law firm has started investigating claims on behalf of individuals that have been members of Ashley Madison because their private information may have been exposed by the company’s recent data breach.
Ashley Madison, a website designed to serve those interested in pursuing extramarital relationships, has been issued a lawsuit in the federal court system of California. Along with its parent company, Ashley Madison is facing claims by a client that he has suffered emotional distress due to failure to properly protect his personal and financial data from cyber theft.
According to recent reports, the personally identifying data of approximately 37 million users of the Ashley Madison website was downloaded by a group called the Impact Team during a security breach of the site some time ago. Following the cyber theft event, the Impact Team threatened to release the sensitive information unless Ashley Madison shut down the website. The hacker group released the stolen information in August following Ashley Madison’s apparent lack of response to their demands.
The hacker group dumped the sensitive data online. The sensitive information released includes email addresses for millions of clients, including top executives of firms based in both North America and Europe. Also included is information on American government officials and civil servants in the United Kingdom.
The lawsuit claims that the institution of protective measures by Ashley Madison and Avid Life Media, Inc., could have prevented the breach from occurring. One example of a protective measure mentioned in the lawsuit is the process of data encryption to ensure the security of sensitive information.
In addition to releasing embarrassing personal information about the clients, the breach made possible the exposure of other information such as addresses, phone numbers and credit card information.
Our law firm believes that the rights of the Ashley Madison members affected by this have been violated, and that they may be entitled to compensation.
