Understanding Asbestos Relates Lung Cancer

Lung cancer remains the second most recognized cause of death every year. More than two-hundred thousand people are diagnosed with this type of cancer annually. Studies reveal that at least 3-4% or patients diagnosed with lung cancer was caused from asbestos exposure.

People can get lung cancer for other reasons; like exposure to harsh and dangerous chemicals and radon. Although not all doctors diagnose patients while considering asbestos exposure, studies indicate that asbestos-related cancer is additionally predominant than previous research revealed.

Where is Asbestos Found and What Happens When People Breathe in the Fibers?

Exposure to Asbestos leads to thousands of cases of Lung Cancer. Find out if you have a case.

Asbestos can be in many locations; auto repair shops, older buildings, playgrounds, construction sites, etc. Even the smallest amount of asbestos is dangerous. Studies reveal that the longer a person is expose to it, though, puts him or her at a higher risk of developing mesothelioma or asbestos Lung Cancer. When people breathe in the particles from asbestos, the body cannot get rid of the toxins and the small, fibrous crystals, which results in lung damage the longer people are exposed to it.

Oftentimes, people confuse lung cancer with mesothelioma, because most cases result in lung damage. What happens with malignant mesothelioma, though, is that the inner lining of the lungs becomes infected and tumors form within the lung’s linings. That happens because the asbestos fibrous crystals scar the lung tissue. First signs of this fatal illness can be: chest pain or abdominal pain, not only lung pain.

Diagnosis of Asbestos Lung Cancer

This type of cancer can grow within the lungs for many years. In some cases, patients did not realize they had Lung Cancer until 15 years later. Asbestos-related cancer has a dormancy time-frame of fifteen to thirty-five years.

Imaging tests are usually performed to better diagnose lung diseases; like X-Rays and/or CT Scans. Sometimes, an MRI is a necessary test. Another test a physician might perform is a sputum (mucus) cytology; if necessary. Most times, a biopsy and/or tissue sample will be necessary to finalize a diagnosis. Once a diagnosis has been delivered to the patient, a physician will run additional tests to determine what stage the cancer is at; stage 1, 2, 3 or 4.

As with any type of cancer, detecting it early is vital, so the patient will have a better prognosis. Unfortunately, not all people are diagnosed early enough, as asbestos lung cancer spreads quickly once the tumors have started to form. The good news is that, with modern technology, the chance of surviving it is higher.

A few of the First Signs of Asbestos-Related Lung Cancer:

• A cough that does not get back
• Chest pain
• Trouble breathing
• Shortness of breath
• Spitting up or coughing up sputum or phlegm
• Significant weight loss
• Exhaustion – more than normal

Treatments for Asbestos Lung Cancer

• Surgery
• Chemo
• Radiation

In the early stages of asbestos lung cancer, surgery and chemotherapy are usually the only treatments used. For more advanced cases, the treatments advance and are more intense. Unfortunately, not all people get diagnosed early enough and require more medical treatments, surgeries, etc. Sometimes, a patient might lose part or all his or her lung to remove all tumors. As medical research and technology advances, the survival rates grow higher for patients diagnosed with asbestos lung cancer. Researchers continue to work hard to find a cure.
