There have been numerous reports of consumers being injured from fiberglass particles falling out of their bed mattresses. Recently, Zinus, a mattress manufacturer, has had a class action lawsuit filed against it over this matter. The lawsuit alleges that the mattresses have hazardous glass fibers. Plaintiffs Robert Durham and Amanda Chandler stated that large fibers fell out when they unzipped the mattresses.

The class action lawsuit was filed on February 14, 2020. In the lawsuit, the plaintiffs allege that the glass fibers caused life-threatening injuries to their families. Plaintiff Amanda Chandler stated that the mattress came with an outer cover that had a tag that stated that it contained 62 percent glass fiber. She claims that that the company did not inform people that the cover should not be removed and that the company did not tell people that the glass fibers would fall out if the cover was removed.

Chandler claims that she removed the cover from the mattress in order to clean it on January 20, 2020. She took the cover off to wash it and let her sons play on the mattress. Robert, her husband, pointed out that his skin was itchy the next day. They also noticed that their entire house was filled with glass fibers.

When Chandler discovered that the fibers came from the mattress, she immediately removed it from her home. The family is living in a hotel because their home has been contaminated with fiberglass. The plaintiffs stated that glass fiber exposure can cause upper respiratory irritation, eye irritation and skin irritation. If glass fibers penetrate the skin, then they may need to be surgically removed.

It can cost thousands of dollars to clean a home that has been damaged by fiberglass. Experts advise people to leave the house until it has been cleaned. The plaintiffs stated that they would not have purchased the mattress if they would have known that it had fiberglass.

While this particular lawsuit alleges injuries sustained from Zinus brand mattresses, numerous other mattress brands use fiberglass as a fireproofing material in their mattresses. Many consumers do not know, and have not been properly warned by the companies of the risks associated with mishandling these fiberglass containing mattresses.
