Blenders and food processors are extremely efficient and useful kitchen tools. But, with powerful motors spinning sharp blades at a high rate of speed, the possibilities of injuring consumers when things go wrong are high. Two recent reports to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (a US federal agency) regarding Ninja BL model blenders allege such a scenario. In both reports, consumers allege that they were severely injured when the blades of their Ninja blenders became exposed during operation. Both consumers ended up in the hospital after these incidents.

Canister came shooting off, exposing the blades of their Ninja Blenders, two consumers allege

Two consumers reported to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission that while blending with their Ninja blenders (Ninja BL450 and Ninja BL660), the canister of the blenders came shooting off, exposing the spinning blades of the machines. Both consumers were hospitalized from injuries sustained from these incidents. USCPSC investigators describe a similar fact pattern for both incidents, indicating that this may be a more widespread problem.

In one incident, a 64 year old man was using his Ninja BL450 blender and “alleges that the pressure intensity inside the Canister and/or the inadequate threads on the blade assembly caused the Canister to shoot off the base, leaving the motorized blades exposed and spinning and causing them to injure the consumer’s fingers.”

Similarly, a 27 year old man was injured while using his Ninja BL660 blender, alleging  “that the pressure intensity inside the Canister and the inadequate threads on the Blade Assembly caused the Canister to come off the Base leaving the motorized blades of the Blade Assembly exposed and spinning and causing them to seriously injure Plaintiff’s fingers.”
