The increased need for hand sanitizers has led to an increase in the number of these products that contain methanol. Even some of those that are labeled as containing ethanol have been contaminated with methanol. State officials have reported an increase in cases of both children and adults who have ingested contaminated hand sanitizers that led to hospitalization, blindness, and, in some cases, death.

Numerous consumers have been injured from hand sanitizer that contains toxic Methanol

Methanol toxicity can result from ingesting or from absorption through the lungs or absorption through the skin. Absorption through the skin can be a problem for anyone, but young children are at the highest risk of this.  Symptoms of methanol poisoning include nausea, vomiting, dizziness, headaches, weakness, visual disturbances, and loss of consciousness. Serious cases of methanol poisoning can lead to vision blindness and even death.

The FDA has issued warnings for the following products (full recall list at the bottom of this page) and is in the process of issuing a recall with the distributors and manufacturers. FDA testing continues to ensure the safety of hand sanitizers and has a list of both those that are approved and those that have been recalled here.

In particular, hand sanitizers manufactured by Eskbiochem have been recalled and consumers should discard any they may have. Americans are encouraged to practice good hygiene that includes frequently washing their hands for a minimum of 20 seconds, particularly:

  • Before eating
  • After coughing or sneezing or blowing the nose
  • After using the bathroom
  • Use an alcohol-based sanitizer if soap-and-water washing isn’t feasible.

Consumers are encouraged to be vigilant when using hand sanitizers and avoid those on the recall list or those that contain methanol because some of these products may still be available in-store or online.

Consumers are cautioned not to use hand sanitizer on their pets and to keep it out of the reach of children. Poison control centers have seen an increase in cases since the onset of the pandemic and it’s attributed to the increased usage of hand sanitizer.

When disposing of sanitizers that contain methanol, do not pour them down the drain or flush them down the toilet. Use a hazardous waste container or take it to a recycling center.

Consumers, patients, and healthcare professionals should report adverse reactions to a particular hand sanitizer to the FDA’s MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting program with as much documentation as possible. Alternatively, it can be faxed to 1(800) FDA-0178.

The FDA is an agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services that is responsible for protecting the effectiveness, safety, and security of drugs and vaccines as well as other biological products for both human and animal use. It also protects the food supply, dietary supplements, cosmetics, tobacco, and devices that emit electronic radiation.
